LIPA/NYSERDA Study
updated! Offshore wind power has the potential of providing a significant
portion of Long Island’s electricity. Wind power applications on land
are technologically mature and reliable, and in windy areas they can be
cost-competitive with conventional energy sources. Wind can also be a
major electricity provider, as evidenced in Denmark which derives 18% of
its electricity needs from the wind. Long Island, however, is in short
supply of appropriate onshore sites for large-scale wind development.
Consequently, turning to the sea is Long Island’s only option if it
wants to make wind power a meaningful part of its energy mix.
